German Champion THW Kiel will have to play without Kim Andersson for six weeks. The Swedish back-court player has suffered a torn frontal outer ligament in his left foot during the Champions League match against Hammarby IF (37:28) last Saturday. This was the result of an examination, announced the club on Monday. Andersson is the fith back-court player who is out in Kiel due to an injury after Nikola Karabatic, Christian Zeitz, Filip Jicha and Daniel Wessig. As a substitute for Karabatic the club has already signed Ales Pajovic from the Spanish champion Ciudad Real last week.

Andersson suffered his injury in the ninth minute of the Champions League match against the Swedish team. Andersson had won the ball in defense and started in the counter attack, followed by Tobias Karlsson who was trying to get the ball back. Andersson kept the ball and passed to Vid Kavticnik who scored the 6:6. In the mean-time Andersson fell over Karlsson and hurt his left ankle. And so the celebration of the fans in Kiel stopped quickly when Andersson slumped down in pain. Tobias Karlsson who has played some matches as member of the THW Kiel was also shocked by the injury of his compatriot and former team-mate. Sitting on the bench, Andersson followed the rest of the match, in the half-time break he limped with crutches and a thick bandage in the dressing rooms.

The problems in the team roster of Kiel have therewith even worsend. With Filip Jicha and Nikola Karabatic the German Champions League winner is missing his left back players, now the right back position is also no longer existing with Christian Zeitz and Kim Andersson missing. Moreover, Youngster Daniel Wessig can not step up in the team as the 19-year old is also injured. Andersson won’t play in the Bundesliga top-match against Hamburg (6.11.) and will miss the away-match in the Champions League in Constanta (11.10.). “The treatment is very difficult at the moment because of a heavy internal bleeding”, said THW team-doctor Dr. Detlev Brandecker after the examination of Anderssons.

„It is simply not good to see three middle backs play on the three back court positions. You have never trained that, but it was enough for a win against Hammarby”, said THW-coach Zvonimir Serdarusic after the match. The 57-year old coach became sarcastic when he was asked if Kiel plans to sign another player. He wanted to sign another player “but Staffan (Olsson) unfortunately didn’t have enough spare time to play in Constanta on the next week-end”, said Serdarusic. “But seriously – with this team we do not face great prospects, especially because Christian Zeitz won’t be back with the team so quickly. He had a bleeding in the operated hip, if this hip is encasulated by now there might be another operation waiting. After a magnetic resonance tomography we will know more, but we expect another four to six weeks break for Christian”, continued Serdarusic.
